Accuracy of the FAMACHA© method in ewes fed different levels of crude protein Animal Sciences
Macedo, Francisco de Assis Fonseca de; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Lourenço, Fábio José; Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso; Santello, Graziela Aparecida; Escola Superior Batista do Amazonas; Martins, Elias Nunes; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.; Mora, Natália Holtz Alves Pedroso; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Mexia, Alexandre Agostinho; Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso.
The accuracy of the FAMACHA© method was evaluated on the identification of female sheep fed two levels of crude protein, naturally infected with Haemonchus contortus, by means of the correspondent hematocrit value. Forty-seven female sheep of the breeds Santa Inês (n = 16), Texel (n = 16) and Ile de France (n = 15) aged between eight and twelve months were assigned to two treatments, 12 or 16 % crude protein in the diet. All the animals were wormed thirty days before the first data collections, which were done fortnightly between July 2005 and March 2006. The color of the ocular conjunctiva was individually evaluated according to the precepts of the FAMACHA© method and the hematocrit value of each animal was obtained in laboratory. A correlation of...

Climate conditions associated with the occurrence of antimicrobial and macrocyclic lactone residues in bulk tank milk Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Picinin,L.C.A.; Toaldo,I.M.; Hoff,R.B.; Souza,F.N.; Leite,M.O.; Fonseca,L.M.; Diniz,S.A.; Silva,M.X.; Haddad,J.P.A.; Cerqueira,M.M.O.P.; Bordignon-Luiz,M.T..
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to identify the climate condition parameters that are associated with the occurrence of antimicrobial and macrocyclic lactone residues in bulk tank milk using a multivariate principal components analysis (PCA). A total of 132 raw milk samples were collected at dairy farms in Minas Gerais State in Brazil and analyzed for 35 analytes, comprising macrocyclic lactones and antibacterials, using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry in tandem mode spectrometry. Of the 132 samples, 34 (25.76%) bulk tank milk samples were positive for at least one analyte. PCA showed that antimicrobial residues in bulk tank milk occurred less frequently on days with a higher average temperature, maximum temperature and...

Comparative evaluation of anthelmintic and antibacterial activities in leaves and fruits of Garcinia cambogia (Gaertn.) desr. and Garcinia indica (Dupetit-Thouars) choisy BABT
Tharachand,C.; Selvaraj,C. Immanuel; Abraham,Z..
This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro anthelmintic activity and antibacterial activity of the extracts from the leaves and fruits of Garcinia indica (Dupetit-Thouars) Choisy and Garcinia cambogia(Gaertn.) Desr. using the Indian earthworm Pheretima posthuma. Two concentrations (25 and 50 mg/mL) of various extracts such as petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol and water were tested. Albendazole at the concentrations of 25 and 50 mg/mL was used as the standard reference. Significant anthelmintic effects of the fruits and leaves of G. cambogia and G. indica (P<0.05) were observed and the results were expressed in terms of paralysis and death time. All the extracts showed the dose dependent paralysis and death of earthworms. Among all the...

Milk quality parameters associated with the occurrence of veterinary drug residues in bulk tank milk Scientia Agricola
Picinin,Lidia Cristina Almeida; Toaldo,Isabela Maia; Hoff,Rodrigo Barcellos; Souza,Fernando Nogueira; Leite,Mônica Oliveira; Fonseca,Leorges Moraes; Diniz,Soraia Araújo; Silva,Marcos Xavier; Haddad,João Paulo Amaral; Cerqueira,Mônica Maria Oliveira Pinho; Bordignon-Luiz,Marilde Terezinha.
ABSTRACT Veterinary drug residues in bulk tank milk are important to all sectors of the dairy chain because they are one of the major factors which determine the safety of the final product. This study attempted to identify milk quality parameters that are associated with the occurrence of veterinary drug residues using multivariate principal component analysis (PCA). A total of 132 raw milk samples were collected from 45 dairy farms in the state of Minas Gerais - Brazil and analyzed for 42 analytes, including pyrethroids, macrocyclic lactones and antibacterials, using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry in tandem mode and gas chromatography with electron capture detection. Out of the 132 milk samples, 40 samples tested positive for at...

Ovicidal activity of succinic acid isolated from sisal waste (Agave sisalana) against gastrointestinal nematodes of goats Ciência Rural
Santos,Nathália Silva de Souza; Santos,Jener David Gonçalves; Santos,Francianne Oliveira; Serra,Taiane Menezes; Lima,Hélimar Gonçalves de; Botura,Mariana Borges; Branco,Alexsandro; Batatinha,Maria José Moreira.
ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to evaluate the in vitro anthelmintic activity of the succinic acid (SA) isolated from sisal waste against gastrointestinal nematodes of goats, using the egg hatching and larvae motility assays. In addition, potential cytotoxicity of SA on Vero cell cultures was investigated by means of MTT (3-4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl, 2,5diphenyltetrazolium bromide) test. The SA induced a significant inhibition of egg hatching (P<0.05) at all concentrations tested (60 to 250µg mL-1), and the concentrations to inhibit 50% (EC50) and 90% (EC90) values (mean ± standard deviation) were 90.3±2.8 and 130.6±3.5µg mL-1, respectively. The SA has not shown larvicidal activity. The SA was less toxic to the Vero cells, with the mean percentage of...

The role of condensed tannins in ruminant animal production: advances, limitations and future directions R. Bras. Zootec.
Naumann,Harley D.; Tedeschi,Luis O.; Zeller,Wayne E.; Huntley,Nichole F..
ABSTRACT Tannins represent one of the most abundant polyphenolic compounds in plants. Tannins exist as a multitude of chemically unique entities in nature. The most commonly occurring tannins are typically divided into two major classes based on chemical structure: hydrolysable (HT) or condensed tannins (CT). Hydrolysable tannins are esters of gallic or ellagic acid linked to a polyol core, typically glucose. Condensed tannins or proanthocyanidins consist of flavan-3-ol subunits linked together to form oligomers and polymers. Both HT and CT are defined as astringent, medium-to-high-molecular weight polyphenolic compounds that characteristically bind and precipitate soluble proteins. The objective of this paper was to present recent advances in CT-ruminant...
